As a perennial plant in the South, the Cast Iron is ubiquitous in the landscapes of designer Katie Ridley Murphy’s native Atlanta, Georgia. “They’re everywhere,” says Ridley Murphy. “It’s basically considered a weed where I’m from, but it’s so beautiful.” While Cast Iron leaves are typically utilized as filler flowers in people’s gardens, Ridley Murphy showcases its standalone artistry with her porcelain sculptures that honor the plant’s distinctive nature. “I was drawn to its detail — the veins are very prominent all the way down the center stalk of the leaf,” she explains — and recreates in her own designs.
