Konekt

Influenced by artist Eva Hesse’s sculpture “Untitled or Not Yet,” in which net bags are weighted down by polyethylene spheres, Konekt designers Helena and Natasha Sultan deliver a similar sensibility with their first-ever lighting collection. The metal links from chainmail resemble the artwork’s knotted string sacks, while the organic shape of the hand-blown glass parallels the silhouette formed from the weight of the plastic used in Hesse’s masterpiece. “We really loved the way the bags are clustered together and the elongated shape that results,” says Natasha, adding that the draping of chainmail in medieval Viking helmets also played a role in the pendant’s design.

Enlisting a metal fabricator that originally created chainmail bags and jewelry in the early 20th-century, Konekt modernizes the historic craft for contemporary design. Like sewing fabric, each metal piece is linked together by following a particular pattern. As a final step, the chainmail panel is dangled over the lightbulb.
